Ubud is a town of art and culture built amid rice paddies and steep ravines. Many people visit Ubud for its art museums, craft galleries and Tek Tok, a traditional Balinese dance performed with body movements and musical sounds mouthed by the dancers. A Tek Tok dance usually carries a moral message lauding traditional Balinese values like devotion, compassion and sacrifice. The notable Ubud Writers and Readers Festival (UWRF) is held every year in Ubud.

The Bukit Peninsula is a large limestone peninsula, connected to Kuta through Jimbaran by the busy Jalan Bypass Nusa Dua. Visitors come here mostly for the famous cliff-hanging temple at Uluwatu, some most beautiful beaches, that include Balangan, and the top surfing spots in Bali. Other things to see or do here are the Kecak Dances held at the Uluwatu Temple, golfing and Spas. The Bukit Peninsula is also becoming a popular destination for those wishing to get married or renew their vows.

The Besakih Temple is a complex of 23 Hindu temples built on the slopes of Mount Agung in eastern Bali. The conical Mount Agung is the biggest active volcano on the island. The largest and most important of the temples is Pura Penataran Agung which has six terraced levels running up the slope. The temple entrance is marked by a unique split gateway. Time your visit to coincide with one of the 70 festivals held at the temple complex every year based on the traditional Balinese calendar.

The Uluwatu Temple, located in south Kuta, is a Hindu temple built on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean. The panoramic view of the sea and coastline from the temple is spectacular. The Temple is famous for its troops of mischievous monkeys that saunter freely about the grounds as well as the impressive Kecak trance inducing dance performed every day at the Temple. Visitors are advised to visit the Temple early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat.

The Tanah Lot Temple, located northwest of Denpasar, sits on a large offshore rock. Tanah Lot means “Land (in the) Sea” in the Balinese language. It is one of the seven sea temples around the Balinese coast, and honors the Goddess of the sea, Dewa Baruna or Bhatara Segara. It is believed that the Temple is guarded by many venomous sea snakes, as well as a larger serpent, that lie on the rock to fend off any evil spirits or intruders that might try to gain access to the Temple.

Jimbaran Bay in southern Bali has a fishing village which is well known as a most desirable culinary destination. There is an endless row of seafood restaurants all along the beach with an abundance of live seafood on display. There you can pick out the items you want and the chef will have it prepared and grilled over a fire of coconut husks. In the morning you can see the fishermen on the beach with their morning catches. Or, enjoy a sunset to frame that perfect holiday picture.
